Well, another week has come and gone! I’m not going to lie – I’m tired this week! We started the week off with sickness. I was sick as was Asher. I have to say though, I’ve been using essential oils on Asher when he gets sick and there is not a question in my mind that they help shorten his colds and make them less intense. During the past 14 months, he’s only had two colds and I haven’t had to take him to the doctor for sickness! Amazing! Then, the middle of the week was a bit stressful while we unveiled the new look here on Addicted to Saving. We had issues with our server and coding and that resulted in our website being down for 8 hours on Wednesday. Normally, I would have been very stressed out. But I’m not going to lie – the reprieve from working was refreshing. :)

This week’s shopping trip was a large one. We really wanted to take advantage of the Huggies diaper and wipes deal so I knew that we would be spending more money than normal. I was very excited to get four jumbo packs of diapers for $3.99 each.  Especially because three of the four packs were Huggies Overnites Diapers and I love them. We also got Sandra’s Stuffed Chicken Breasts which we love. We’ll bake the chicken, make a side veggie and some rice and have a very quick and easy (and tasty) dinner.

Please remember that you do not see any chicken or ground beef purchased because we have stocked up on boneless, skinless chicken breasts and ground beef with Zaycon Foods. **Right now Zaycon Foods is taking reservations for their upcoming Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breast Events and Lean Ground Beef Events! You also do not see much produce as we belong to a coop and every other week get a delivery of organic fruits and veggies.

Happy end of the week! I was excited about today’s shopping trip because I felt like it was really well-rounded. Sometimes my trips seem like they are mostly frozen foods, othertimes (like last week) it is a lot of prepared foods.. This week it had a little bit of everything. As you know, I don’t usually buy much fresh meat because my freezer is stocked by Zaycon Foods. But I couldn’t resist taking advantage of the Free Ground Beef wyb 3 Hamburger Helper Mail in Rebate. I was really excited about the Celentano Ravioli and the Scotties Facial tissue deals as well. Since fresh asparagus was on sale, we bought some. I could eat asparagus every day of the week!

Our Halloween candy stockpile is starting to grow. We have five bags of candy now. We live in a new neighborhood and I’m not sure how many kiddos we will have. I’ll probably try to get at least 3 or 4 more bags before Halloween is here just to insure that we have enough to go around.

We had a much quieter week this week than last. Last week was busy with Asher’s birthday and then weekend plans. So this week was all about getting back into a routine (i.e. getting Asher’s sleeping schedule back on track). Earlier in the week the weather tempted us with cooler weather. I was excited to feel “fall-like” weather but now the hot temps are back. I am definitely looking forward to when the weather cools and we can open our windows!

This week’s shopping trip was not a big one, but we bought enough items to spend almost $40.00. When I started couponing in early 2009, I would very easily go shopping and spend $3.00 or $4.00. In fact, in 2010, I spent under $1,000 on groceries the entire year. Now, however, I just can’t get my numbers that low. I have to buy milk and yogurt for Asher, we need fresh produce (although we have joined a coop so I don’t have to buy much each week) and simple things like batteries are a necessity when you have toys for your toddler. In 2009 and 2010, I focused primarily on the sales – the really good sales. I didn’t buy much more than that. Looking back, my purchases just weren’t the most realistic. We gave away a ton of groceries each month, but we still didn’t need as much as we were buying. So now, I definitely take advantage of the deals to be had, but I don’t buy as much. And I even buy *gasp* groceries that are not on sale and that don’t have a coupon.

Please remember that you do not see any chicken or ground beef purchased because we have stocked up on boneless, skinless chicken breasts and ground beef with Zaycon Foods. **Right now Zaycon Foods is taking reservations for their upcoming Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breast Events and Lean Ground Beef Events!

photo-show-tellWhew! Hello out of pocket spending. This week was a pricey shopping week. I wanted to take advantage of the Pampers sale & coupons so I knew going into the trip that this trip would be a bit more than normal. We stocked up on Old El Paso seasonings, kits and beans and also got 4 packages of Barber Chicken Breasts. At least the Barber chicken guarantees the protein for 4 meals for us!

This Sunday we are going to an Ethiopian themed party that our friends are throwing. Everyone is supposed to bring an Ethiopian dish. I’m bringing a dish called Atakilt Wat. Nope, I’ve never made it. It’s a vegetarian dish that includes cabbage, carrots and potatoes. (This is why I bought cabbage & potatoes)  And tons of spices – many of which I don’t have. Tomorrow I’m going to do some research to see if there are spices I can mix together to make something comparable to cardamom or fenugreek seeds or turmeric powder. Otherwise, I’m going to be headed out to see what store(s) carry these spices!

asher-2-bdayThis was an awesome week for us as a family. Asher turned two yesterday. We’ve been talking to him about his upcoming birthday for about 2 weeks. He would repeat back “Asher two” or “birthday cake” or “Asher’s birthday.” But he didn’t realize just what his birthday meant until yesterday morning when  he saw streamers and ballooons outside his bedroom door. He then realized the day was all about him when he was given the option of going out to breakfast with dadda to get donuts or pancakes (he chose pancakes at IHOP).  I bought an amazing Publix cake (pictured above). We didn’t have a big birthday party and I really didn’t want to order a 1/4 sheet cake… however,  I couldn’t resist. Asher is all about trucks right now. And I just had to get him this cake! Fortunately, Publix Baby Club sent me a $4.00 off 1/4 sheet cake coupon AND I used a $5/$30 Winn Dixie coupon bringing my cake down to $22 versus $31.00. We had friends drop over to eat cake with us so we did put a dent in the cake although there is lots frozen in my freezer right now! Asher’s favorite gift was the lawn mower that my mom gave him. You may remember when I posted Little Tikes Gas ‘n Go Mower deal in August? Well, I was thinking about getting it for Asher until my mom said she got it for him. Well, when he saw the mower, his eyes lit up and he gave this smile that I have only seen a couple times. I thought he was going to cry with happiness. It was adorable. He got some other great gifts and it was so fun to watch him realize that each gift was for him. Today when he woke up, we told him his birthday was “over” and “all gone.” I thought he might cry, but he was fine. Throughout the day he did tell me “Asher two years old” and then “birthday over” and then he would say “more birthday.” So fun. Just amazing to see how far we have come these past 14 months! In Ethiopia, they don’t celebrate birthdays. So to see him love his birthday was fun.

asher-2-bday-1the Publix cake was a hit!

asher-2-bday-2Asher opening a present with his new lawn mower safely next to us

asher-2-bday-3The best shot I could get with the birthday boy. Gotta love squirmy (and cute) toddlers!

Now, I realize that as a mom at the end of the week, I’m tired and exhausted and then discouraged when I realize I will never ever be able to sleep in again. :) Last week I told you about how Asher was doing really well swimming. Well, we taped it this week and I had to brag and show you the video. How cute is this kid! :) He swims with his head under water and doesn’t swallow any of it or choke on it! And he isn’t two yet!

I went to Publix late today which is why I’m typing this up late. It was not a large shopping trip but I did take advantage of a large variety of deals. I will give you a head’s up – I bought a lot of processed foods. But as a reminder, we belong to a coop and we have frozen ground beef and chicken breasts in our freezer from Zaycon Foods although both are starting to run low. We also get between 1 – 2 gallons of organic whole milk and creamer at Publix. Sometimes I get the milk when I do my weekly shopping trip and other times, if we run low on milk earlier in the week, we will make a separate trip just for milk.

We actually tried out a new coop this week that is organic. We got a lot less produce compared to our previous coop and it is more expensive. That is the price you pay for organic right? I’m trying to figure out how to fit it into our budget and right now I’m thinking that if I pay for the large coop bin bi-weekly, I will actually spend less than if we ordered a large weekly bin from our previous coop whose prices recently went up. It’s tricky figuring out how to swing the costs of everything isn’t it?

Please remember that you do not see any chicken or ground beef purchased because we have stocked up on boneless, skinless chicken breasts and ground beef with Zaycon Foods. **Right now Zaycon Foods is taking reservations for their upcoming Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breast Events!

photo-show-tellWe had a great week this week! Asher is almost two (he turns two October 2nd) and the past two weeks, something “clicked” with him while swimming. All of a sudden he is swimming like a champ underwater. On his own he will swim underwater sometimes to me or daddy and other times to the wall or stairs. I had him in swimming lessons earlier this summer and those 6 sessions seemed to be the perfect foundation for him to feel comfortable in the pool.

We’ve also really started to get comfortable in our new house. Our old house is under contract and I’m cautiously optimistic that it will be sold soon! I’m not going to lie – paying two mortgages has taken a toll on my nerves. And our checkbook. We knew what we were getting into when we bought a second house. But “knowing” what you are getting into and then experiencing two mortgages, two electric bills, two water bills, etc are very different! This fall we are really starting to reign in our spending and finances. I’m going to blog about everything as I suspect many of you are in a similar position to me! Hopefully you don’t have to go through the enjoyable experience of paying two mortgages (sarcasm ;) ) but if you are finding that finances are stretched, I would love to journey with you as we work on lessening expenses and increasing savings!

This week’s shopping trip was an awesome one! As I prepared my shopping list, hubby said I had a lot of items on my list. That made me nervous thinking that we were going to end up spending way more than I/we wanted to. But we ended up doing awesome. We ended up spending $26.29 on everything pictured above! Also – if you are new to couponing (or need a refresher course), go HERE to read How to Prepare for Your Shopping Trip in 6 Easy Steps.

Please remember that you do not see any chicken or ground beef purchased because we have stocked up on boneless, skinless chicken breasts and ground beef with Zaycon Foods. **Right now Zaycon Foods is taking reservations for their upcoming Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breast Events!

photo-show-tellThis week’s shopping trip was yet another small one. We are still getting situated in our new house and I’ll be honest – my mom has brought us meals at least a few times this past week! ;) I really wanted to use the $1.00 off Fruit & Vegetable Target coupon so we were able to save on asparagus and brussels sprouts – our faves. Now that we have postponed our coop membership, we are finding that it is difficult to get lots of fruits and veggies in our diet. Once we get fully situated here, I’m going to have to get us back on the healthy eating track!

photo-show-tellHappy Friday! We had a crazy week! We actually just moved (so you may notice that my regular photo show & tell table is not pictured) and man.. moving stinks! Hubby’s friends helped him load the rental truck this past Saturday so that helped immensely. My goal was to have Asher’s room unpacked by Saturday night and I was able to meet that goal. I wanted his room to “look and feel” just like his room in our old house by the time we put him to bed. Saturday night was a rough night of sleep for him, but he adapted to the change really quick and has napped and slept like a champ ever since. My kitchen is almost unloaded. But besides that, we still have a ton of boxes that we need to unpack. Simple things like my dog’s brush or rubber gloves or dishwasher detergent are packed away in boxes right now. Maddening. :)

Our shopping trip to Publix wasn’t a huge trip. But we were able to stock up on a few necessities (hello brownie mix and bagels!). We also have put our coop membership on hold so we needed to get some veggies too. We haven’t been eating healthy this past month leading up to our move because life has been so hectic.  I’m hoping to get back into the swing of regularly cooking again soon and will either reinstate our coop membership or join a new coop or start shopping for produce at Aldi and local farmstands. Not sure yet what we are going to do. All I know is that I need to start cooking!
