Yesterday my son and I headed to Publix for a mommy/son date. I haven’t done any major grocery shopping for over two weeks. We’ve gone to the store a couple times but have only bought a couple gallons of milk, a couple dozen eggs and half & half. My fridge is bare. This week our daughter has surgery and I’m not quite sure what to expect for her recovery. So I knew that I needed to shop yesterday instead of waiting until the last minute. While I do try to use hand towels and dish towels throughout the day, I still find that we go through paper towels quickly (and they are not cheap). Time has flown – we’ve been home for over 3 weeks now. But for me, cooking is still a challenge. By the time dinnertime comes around, I am finding that I’m going to whatever quick and easy meals I have in my freezer and pantry. It’s frustrating that I’m not making healthier meals.. but for now, we are in survival mode and just taking it day by day. Pretty soon I need to start making daily slow cooker meals. Because then, I will at least have a hot meal waiting for us at dinnertime! I sent hubby to the store last night to do our weekly shopping trip. I was home with our two kiddos (they were asleep already). I told my hubby that it was a “small shopping trip” but he’s reported back that it was a huge shopping trip. Oops! We are home from China! After spending a little over 2 weeks there, last Wednesday night (5/18), we arrived at Tampa International Airport and became a family of four. Let me tell you – there is NO place like home. We are so glad to be home and reunited with our son. This past week has not been without challenges, but each day we are getting more and more accustomed to our new life and our little girl is becoming more and more comfortable in her new home. AND, she’s starting to like me – which helps daddy who was growing wearing having her as a permanent attachment on his hip during our time in China. Our son is still adjusting to no longer being an only child. It’s hard to watch and honestly, my heart breaks for him. But we are all getting used to our new normal and I know that with time, he’ll be more adjusted.

This week was my first time couponing in what seems like months. I HAD to go to Publix to take advantage of the S’mores deal. And we needed more milk and eggs. I already went to the store on Sunday with my son and we filled our cart and used zero coupons. That is what jet lag and an empty fridge will do to you! I forsee going through 2-3 gallons (maybe more) of milk and at least 2 dozen eggs each week. Although right now our daughter is still on formula – but once she’s weaned off it, we’ll be spending big bucks on her milk and eggs.

I pictured the S’more deal (I did it twice) separately because we had to go to a second Publix in order to find marshmallows in stock. You all have wiped the shelves clean of marshmallows! (not that I blame you) Our Publix is awesome and one of our friends at customer service called a local Publix and had them hold marshmallows for us. That definitely made our day.

Below is a picture of Asher and Jolie in the shopping cart in Publix. It was Jolie’s first time in a shopping cart and I’m finding that if we expose her to new things with her brother present, she’s fine. She and Asher had a great time riding side-by-side. Although, if you were near us, you would have heard me constantly saying “keep your hands and feet to yourself.” Ahh how things have changed now that we have two kiddos!

Today was a fun day because we went shopping at a brand new Publix that just opened. Throughout the store was food samples galore – we literally could have eaten lunch there. And, we got awesome coupons at checkout ($5 off $50 coupons). The only problem? We lost our receipt and coupons at some point after the checkout process. So I no longer have the Publix coupons or my receipt. Because of that, my numbers below are estimates. I know what I bought but don’t know the precise dollar amounts some of the BOGO sales were. I also wasn’t able to figure out the percentage that I saved… I probably could have if I really took the time but as you can see from my instagram photo below, we are in the midst of bringing home our daughter and my brain is mush!

This week’s Publix shopping trip was all about Huggies Diapers. As we are getting ready to become parents to a little girl, I’ve realized that I need to start stocking up on diapers for her. My son is potty trained, but we still use Pull-Ups or diapers during naptime and bedtime. I have a great supply of diapers for him. But nothing for “little sister” (who we are naming Jolie). So we bought 10 jumbo bags of diapers and Pull-Ups. I also got lots of canned beans since we have none in my pantry right now! Happy Spring Forward! I know that I shouldn’t like this day (since I love my sleep), but I’m loving the idea of it staying later longer! Although, my 3 year old’s sleeping schedule is all screwed up. It will definitely take a few days before he has gotten used to losing an hour’s sleep. After 12 days of being sick, I finally felt good enough to get out of the house and bring my son to the grocery store. The other incentive is that I didn’t really have a choice since we have my in-laws staying over our house and our refrigerator was entirely bare. But it was actually really good to be back at it couponing and taking advantage of some of the great deals this week. You will notice we bought a ton of produce (approximately $23 worth of it). We also had to stock up on some dairy necessities like yogurt (my son has yogurt at almost every meal), milk and Ricotta (since I made a lasagna for my sister-in-law’s family). We got some great deals despite having to buy a lot of pricey staples and ended up saving $98.98 when we factored in the sales savings and coupons. Not too shabby when your grocery cart if filled to the brim! My pasta sauce and dried pasta stockpile is also filled to the brim which makes me happy. If I’m really honest with you, we’ve done a lot of pasta the past couple of weeks while I’ve been sick. Such an easy meal and while it isn’t innovative or even particularly healthy, it serves the purpose when you are in survival mode! And, once I start feeling better, I’ll be cooking veggies to go along with our carb loaded dinner and it will make it much more well-rounded.

I also used the $10 off $50 gas card coupon and bought hubby a gas card for $40.00. However, I didn’t factor the $40 in my numbers below.

I had a fun time shopping at Publix today! Often, my mom watches Asher so that I can shop alone. But today, Asher was with me. It was totally chaotic and he was totally loud, but he had me laughing and laughing. It’s really fun to parent a child who is an extrovert, especially when you are an introvert. My son is constantly pulling me out of my comfort zone as he talks to every single person. But it’s a lot of fun and some of the things he says are just hilarious.

Happy Friday! I am posting this late because I’ve been without a car for the past few days. So today I had to work around hubby’s work schedule to pick up my car from the shop and then do my shopping. Hence, my shopping trip is just late. But I still wanted to do it because there were quite a few deals that I wanted to take advantage of. My favorite was definitely the $0.06 Classico Pasta Sauce deal. Just 2 months ago, my dried pasta and jarred sauce stockpile was depleted. Now, with the recent deals I’ve gotten, it is perfectly stockpiled and I have enough to use for months and months. (And, to give away!)

Last week you may recall that I was getting ready to celebrate my son’s 3 year birthday. His birthday was a success. He was so excited all day long to celebrate his birthday and we made sure to make it a day-long affair starting with a giant pancake for breakfast, then we swam at Grandma’s pool and had a hot dog and cupcakes for lunch and ended the day with pizza, birthday cake and gifts. (We were planning on carrying on our tradition of Ethiopian food for dinner but hubby had to work late and couldn’t get to the restaurant and then home in time to celebrate my son’s bday let alone let us eat… so we will get Ethiopian food soon..)

I made my son’s cake and I know I told you all about it. Above is a picture of it. It came out cute right? I know my handwriting isn’t as good as Publix bakery – but this cake cost me about $10 to make while a Publix cake would have cost more. So I felt like it was a frugally cute alternative to the store bought version. (Don’t get me wrong – we LOVE Publix cakes! I just wanted to save a little money.)

And above is a picture of my son blowing out the candles on his cake. After blowing out his candles, he wanted the tractor off of the cake so that he could start playing with it. My son and I headed to Publix last night (Thursday) to do our shopping trip. He woke from his nap early and I had all of my coupons ready – so together we went to tackle the list. It was a large list! Publix has some good deals this week especially when combined with the available coupons. I’m still struggling with the fact that our garage freezer is gone. Our refrigerator/freezer combo in our kitchen is at capacity and I just wish I had a bit more space to store stuff! If I had more freezer space, I would have bought more Boca Burgers.. and I wouldn’t have had such a difficult time finding space for the Freschetta pizzas I bought. Hubby – if you are reading this – a freezer would be an excellent birthday present – wink wink.

My only frustration from last night’s shopping trip is the Tuscan Style Swanson Chicken Broth I bought expired in July! Usually while I’m grocery shopping, I try to examine the expiration dates before adding items to my cart. But I was distracted with my son. So it looks like I will be headed back to Publix to return the two cartons of broth. So frustrating!

I’ve had a busy week! It’s only getting busier this weekend so I don’t think I’ll get in a much needed nap. But, I’m very excited because my brother is coming to stay with us tomorrow night and my son just LOVES his uncle. What a week! While I love the idea of 3 day weekends, in actuality, they throw my whole week off. I’ve spent every day each week thinking it was a different day! This week’s grocery trip was all about stocking up on canned beans. Most of you know that I love using beans in pretty much any and every meal that I make. There was a time when I had literally 50 or 60 cans of beans in my stockpile. Now, however, I’m down to just a couple cans of black beans. We have had a great week this week! It’s the end of the week and I’m always running on empty during this time of the week. In fact, as I’m typing this, my son is napping and I’m SO tempted to nap. Today is the first time in a long time that I felt like an official couponer. Now, I did spend a lot of money. But, I was able to add to my dwindling stockpile and really stock up on some necessities that we use a lot of! My absolute favorite deal was the Birds Eye Protein Blends deal. After using the $1.00 off coupon, each bag was only $0.45! And I also loved the Prego Sauce deal. We are down to just two jars of sauce in our stockpile and while I don’t use jar sauce often, I like to have more on hand for quick pinches and slow cooker meals that call for sauce. My son’s favorite deal is the Musselman’s apple sauce deal. Apple sauce is a staple in our house and I love that I was able to get him six 6-packs of unsweetened apple sauce! I am also very intrigued by the Betty Crocker Suddenly Salad Mixes. It wasn’t a stellar “deal” (each box was $0.90 each) but I have never tried their new flavors and look forward to making them.

Happy Friday! Hubby was so awesome and tonight he took Asher to Publix to do our weekly shopping trip. This past year I have been dealing with neck and upper back issues and this past week my pain has been unbearable at times. If I could, I would be laying down all day because I find the pain subsides to a manageable level when my head is resting on a flat mattress. But alas, that isn’t going to happen! So I’m doing my neck exercises, icing, taking turmeric supplements as well as Aleve and I’ll be headed back to the chiropractor next week. All that to say, the idea of shopping sounds horrible! So I was thankful when hubby offered to go!

This week was a very special week for us as a family. On Wednesday, the 19th, we celebrated “Family Day.” Family Day is the anniversary of the day our son joined our family and we became a family of three. We’ve been a family of three for two full years now – time flies! I honestly think I like this day more than birthdays. It’s just such a special day for us. In honor of family day, we went to the Ethiopian restaurant Queen of Sheba in Tampa. We feasted on Ethiopian food and then came home to eat cake. If you never have tried Ethiopian food, you really should try it! It’s quite the experience. Most of the foods are stew-like and have been simmering in flavorful spices all day long. The main staple of the meal is injera. It is a sponge-like sour doughish tortilla-like pancake that you use to eat your food. You don’t use utensils. You just use pieces of the injera to pick up the food. It’s a great meal for toddlers who barely use their forks! Just make sure you specify whether or not you like your food spicy as some of the food can be pretty spicy!

Today’s shopping trip was a small one where we focused on some of the good BOGO deals. I wanted to stock up on some more freezer deals, but now that our stand alone freezer has died, we are very limited on freezer space. Now I need to find myself a deal on a good freezer!

I know when you look at today’s shopping trip, you will find a lot of odd combinations! I did go to the store earlier this week for milk. Today’s goal was frozen pizzas and some produce. And, the ingredients for a new, decadent brownie I want to try making that requires marshmallows and rice krispies. The best deal I got today was on Toaster Strudel. But my favorite deal was Sandra’s Chicken. Such an easy dinner to make (with a veggie as a said) and very tasty!

We’ve had a wonderful week though! Busy! But isn’t it always that way? My son is keeping me on my toes with all of the witty things he’s been saying. Toddlers are exhausting but oh so much fun. And I know that someday, when Asher’s all grown and out of the house, I am going to miss these moments!

Today was a short and sweet Publix shopping trip. It has been a rainy week and I’m beat. Somehow the rain manages to zap all of my energy (while adding to my toddler son’s energy) and today I’ve been yearning for a nap! There weren’t a ton of deals I wanted to take advantage of this week at Publix. Our stand up freezer finally broke and thus, I don’t have a lot of freezer space in my fridge/freezer combo. So I’m really conscious of all frozen food that I get now. I did get lots of Plum Organics Baby Food pouches. My son turns 3 in October but still likes pouches. He hates ALL fruits and veggies (I am eager for him to grow out of this stage) and I like knowing that he’s getting at least a bit of nutrition in the pouches! I didn’t have enough coupons to make the pouches free. But if you have a couple of computers, you should be able to get 10 pouches for free (versus $0.41 each like I paid).

I had a great week this week! Hubby returned home safe and sound from Africa late Sunday night. We had a great week this week. It was a bit crazy. My hubby left for Uganda this afternoon. So the past week was spent with him scrambling to pack and organize all of the donations they are bringing. Their Tampa Bay team consists of 6 people (including hubby) and they have 18 fifty pound bags that they checked full of donations they are bringing. It’s quite astounding to think about! I went to Publix after dropping hubby off at the airport and honestly, I wasn’t quite sure what to buy for me and my son. My son is in a phase where he doesn’t like any veggies so I was trying to buy enough produce to last me a week but at the same time won’t go bad.. We’ll see. It will also be interesting being a single parent this next week. Wish me luck!

What a week! On Tuesday night I came down with a fever and sore throat. After being up much of the night alternating between shaking from chills and sweating from being overheated, I woke Wednesday with a screaming headache and sore throat. The sore throat has now carried on and turned into a cold. I have been using my essential oils all week on both myself and my son (who unfortunately got sick too). While some of the oils have definitely helped – the peppermint helped my fever and the Digize helped my nausea, I haven’t found an oil that just perfectly erases all traces of the sinus pressure and cold I’m dealing with now. I’ve been frustrated with my immune system this past year. It’s really down. And I wouldn’t expect that when I factor in the facts that I’m going to the chiropractor, eating super clean and sugar free, taking Vitamin D twice a day and using my oils. I guess that’s life though! I’m just in a stage where I’m more run down I guess!

So all that to say that hubby was a gem and went to Publix for me tonight. We weren’t overwhelmed with excitement over this week’s ad and to be honest, we don’t need much and don’t want to spend money on food we don’t need.

We’ve had a wonderful week! My brother came and stayed with us over the weekend. He wanted to surprise my mom for Mother’s Day. Isn’t that sweet? Don’t ask how I managed to ruin the surprise. But I did. I don’t know what it is about my life but I have become so unlike the old me. I used to be on top of everything and totally organized and would never ruin surprises. Now I’m just barely getting by each day and crashing in bed exhausted every night. But life is good. And despite my ruining his surprise, we had a wonderful time together. My son LOVES his uncle and it is so fun for me to watch them play together!

My shopping trip was short and sweet today. And despite that, pricey. I was excited about getting free organic ground beef because I bought 3 boxes of Hamburger Helper. (The Hamburger Helper is on sale BOGO and I used coupons on the four boxes I purchased.) Everything else on my list was pretty much necessities that I had run out of. I needed more produce, more milk and more almond milk.

You might remember that I started off this year living off our overflowing stockpile. We are still doing that. Although it hasn’t been as easy as I would have predicted. When I originally posted that, I didn’t know that come March 1st, I was going off of all sugar – including staples like pasta, rice and quinoa. So, we aren’t going through our stockpile very quickly and we are also spending more money at the grocery store than I would have predicted (because we are buying so much fresh food). But it is still nice to not need many pantry staples as I shop. So we are “living off our stockpile” but just not as quickly and inexpensively as I would have predicted.

And, considering I went to the store earlier in the week to stock up on more produce, my out of pocket spending on groceries this week was high. As you all know, it is expensive to eat healthy! We’ve had a great week. We are still getting adjusted to my husband’s work schedule, but it seems like every day I’m figuring it out more. And, occasionally he will have an appointment cancel so nights like last night, he actually was home to eat dinner with us. My shopping trip today was a large one. I bought eight bags of cat food. If you’ve followed me on this blog, you know that my cat is very particular with the type of food she eats. Purina Indoor Cat Formula is the brand and flavor she likes. Since it is on sale BOGO and since there are $1.10/1 coupons, I stocked up. We could eat Mexican food every night of the week. I am trying to steer clear from processed foods so I will often use ground beef or chicken on a salad. Meanwhile, the hubby and Asher will have tacos or burritos. Happy Friday! You may have noticed that last week I didn’t post a Photo Show & Tell! It is very rare for me to skip a week of grocery shopping! Earlier this week I actually went to Publix for produce. Now that I am eating pretty clean, I am finding that I have to go to the grocery store early in the week to replenish our dwindling fruits and veggies. Since I just went to Publix on Tuesday for produce, I didn’t have to buy any today. Today’s shopping trip should have been a light one and an inexpensive one. But then I realized that my EVOO stockpile (Extra Virgin Olive Oil) is empty and I had one bottle left with only a couple tablespoons left in it. So I decided to take advantage of the Pompeian deal. It isn’t that good of one – especially since I couldn’t print the $1/1 coupon. But I was in a bind and figured that the sale price was at least better than paying full price next week!

How have you been doing at Publix lately? While Publix is still my favorite grocery store, I’m finding that their sales combined with the available coupons have not been very good. Gone are the days when I was saving 80-90% each week! (Although, I wasn’t buying much produce during those days.. so my savings would have been less if I was on a clean eating plan then.)

What a week! Last week we were recovering from our quick vacation to the mountains in Tennessee. Then, my brother came and stayed with us to celebrate Easter with us. My son adores his Uncle and we had a great weekend! Then, this week, both Asher and I have been battling a cold. Our diffuser and essential oils have been working overtime! Our colds haven’t been that bad, but our colds have required a lot of rest and unfortunately, that hasn’t come easy for me! We are both on the upswing and hopefully our house will be illness free by the weekend!

I also had to share this video we took of our son swimming in the pool. How good is he? He is a better swimmer than I and he’s just 2.5!

Gotta brag. Glad to see he hasn’t lost his swimming skills over the winter! Night swimming with daddy. #lovetoddlers #tiredmommy

I went to Publix to do my weekly shopping yesterday (Thursday). I knew today was going to be a busy day so I wanted to get a jump start on my shopping trip. This is an awesome week to shop at Publix! My absolute favorite week of the year to shop is the week before Thanksgiving. But the week before Easter is a close second! There are always lots tons of BOGO sales and this week there are lots of coupons we can use in conjunction with the sales. My favorites are the 2/$4.00 Publix Butter and the BOGO Domino Sugar!

Our family is headed to the mountains for a couple of days and things are hectic here. I’m just not quite sure where I’m supposed to find the time to do everything – including pack! But it’s a good problem to have and we are ready to get away for a couple of days. Today is hubby’s birthday but since we have so much going on, we celebrated last night. (The nice thing about having a 2.5 year old is that he doesn’t realize if our dates are off and he was SO excited to celebrate.) I had to share this picture I took of them blowing out the candles on daddy’s cake. How cute is this?
